In 1907 architect Frederick Bond, an expert in Gothic architecture and church restoration, was given the task of excavating and exploring the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey by the Church of England but the site was in such disrepair that the layout of the Abbey had been completely lost and nobody knew where to start. The excavation was a momentous thing, impacting on the very origins of Christianity in England. With money and resources insufficient to complete the job Bond, a mystic himself, took a short cut. He held seances with psychic medium John Bartlet. Bartlett obtained messages from the spirit world through 'automatic writing'. During trances Bond and Barlett made contact with a spirit, a 16c monk who claimed to be a representative of the 'Company of Avalon'. The monk guided Bartlett's pen through a series of notes and drawings tracing detailed plans of the hidden foundations of the ruined abbey' Although the spirit information gleaned from these seances directly contradicted the expected architectural layouts of medieval monasteries Bond trusted it and excavated as the spirit had instructed. Almost immediately workmen found walls, towers, doorways and fragments of stained glass. Bond's reputation soared as discovery followed discovery. The excavations were a complete success but realising the prejudice of the time Bond wisely kept the seances to himself. Ten years later, when the results were incontrovertible, he published The Gate of Remembrance (now out of print), a book detailing how Bond's finds had been based on ghostly advice from the long-dead monk John Bryant. There was uproar. The Establishment were shocked and vindictive. The church of England immediately appointed another person to continue the excavations and then squeezed Bond out by strangling his finances. In 1922 when the furor had settled the society for the Restoration of Glastonbury Abbey which controlled all development there was quietly terminated and Bond was actually banned from setting foot in the Abbey grounds ever again! He emigrated to American where he died 20 years later, an embittered man. The Xists had once again censored and suppressed incontrovertible proof of life after death gained through automatic writing.
